We can fight climate change by capturing CO2 from the atmosphere. We will fight climate change by capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) directly from the earth’s atmosphere.

We at Carbon Iceland are preparing to use a technology that has been more than 10 years in the making to contribute to climate change by capturing CO2 directly from the atmosphere.

A green industry that captures CO2 on a large scale from the atmosphere

Carbon Iceland uses a technology, more than 10 years in the making, that has been developed by our partner, Carbon Engineering. This Direct Air Capture technology allows companies like Carbon Iceland to capture millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. We believe that capturing CO2 from the atmosphere is a key factor in fighting climate change because the atmosphere already has large quantities of CO2 emitted in the past that remains trapped in our atmosphere. According to latest measures, there are hundreds of billions of excess amounts of CO2 that will be in existance for a long time, unless we utilize carbon removal soulutions like direct air capture.

Carbon Engineering, our partner company, has a pilot facility in Squamish, Canada, where the company has fully demonstrated the Direct Air Capture technology that is now being commercialized across continents.

Our goal into the future is to build facilities that will each capture one million tons of CO2 from the air each year. We believe these Direct Air Capture plants will work alongside solutions like renewable electricity and energy efficiency to play a key role in addressing climate change.

The location for Direct Air Capture in Iceland

The municipality Norðurþing has agreed to work together with Carbon Iceland to aim at eco-industrial park at Bakki to be the location for Carbon Iceland’s Direct Air Capture plant. In Icelandic, we call such a plant, simply „lofthreinsiver.“

Also, at the eco-industrial park at Bakki, Carbon Iceland intends to locate production of green liquid CO2 for food enrichment and also to have a facility that can use the CO2 we capture to produce green fuel for the shipping and transportation industry.
